Commitment To Success

1987 while I was struggling building my Network Marketing business in The Philippines, I have the opportunity to meet a very successful Malaysian Network Marketer, Ong Hock Siew who was one of the Top Income Earner of the company that I was working with. Ong Hock Siew is an adventurer, Master Trainer, Motivator, Sportsmen, Author and Corporate Leader and he shared this powerful statement about Success with me; “Nothing will happens without Commitment!”

The Buzzword for Success today is Commitment. It does not matter whether it is completing a job in time, delivering the best customer service to delight a customer, meeting deadlines, achieving sales target, implementing procedures, maintaining quality or enforcing safety standards etc…, we need committed people to complete the necessary tasks. Commitment means doing what you said you would do!

For any team or organization to be successful, we need to have individuals who are committed to excellence. The challenge is to be able to get a full team of individuals to be committed together to success.

In the last 7 weeks while I was very busy forming a team of committed leaders to develop a new business together with my friend and business partner Philip Lim, we discovered that when we have a small team of individuals who are committed to a common set of goals, purposes and success, the team will create positive power and energy that are unstoppable.

However, the fact remain that there are very few committed leaders who are willing to make a commitment for success. It had been said that there are basically 3 groups of people in a team; those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who do not know what happen!

The first group of people comprise of leaders or potential leaders in a team. They are team players and they are willing to take the leadership challenge to walk the extra miles together with you to make things happen. They do not sweat the small stuffs, give excuses and justify for their failures. They do whatever that is right to succeed. They are willing to adapt to change and pay the price for success. My friend and business partner, Philip Lim is exemplary of the first group of people who Make Things Happen in our new business venture together!

I strongly believes, “Nothing happens without Commitment”. The Price that we pay for Success will always be far lesser than the Prize that we are going to get in return for Success. For those who are not willing to make a commitment for success and to make life significant, more often than not will continue to live an ordinary and mediocre life.

Make a Commitment to Yourself, your Family, your Team and the Organization you are working with today for Success and to achieve greater heights of accomplishments in the months ahead!

“Commitment is the secret ingredient in every recipe of Success.” (Author unknown)

An Opportunity Is Never Lost!

In my last blog post, I shared the Formula Of Success.

Success = Goals + Effort + Opportunity

Talking about Opportunity reminds me of the story of Disneyland. Last year, my family and I have an unforgettable vacation to Disneyland Hong Kong. (See picture, my wife Stephanie, Ryan (right) and Jordan (left) In 1999 my wife, Stephanie and I visited Disneyland, Anaheim, California, USA.

Disneyland opens in Anaheim, California, USA on the 17th July, 1955. Disneyland comes from the Vision of Walt Disney. In the 1940s, Disneyland was originally conceived to be a tiny (less than 10 acre) place for Disney employees in Burbank, California. W
orld War II put those plans on hold, and that gave Walt Disney time to grow his plans even larger.

He wanted to create a place for both parents and kids - a place where they could be together. He wanted to create the happiest place on earth. (Picture below shows the plague at the entrance of Disneyland).

So the size of the park grew from 10 acres to 100 acres, and the eventual site was a 160-acre orange orchard near Anaheim, California, USA. Plans for the park were out of this world for the time and included artificial lakes, rivers, forests and mountains.

Many of the rides and attractions had never been imagined before. They were divided into zones with names like Adventureland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.

The magical moments that Disneyland offers around the world today remind me of a very important lesson that I learn about Seizing an Opportunity.

Years ago Walter took his friend Arthur to see some land in open country where cattle were idly grazing. Walter explained about his dream for developing this area. He told his friend that in time the area would be surrounded by many restaurants, hotels and convention centers. He told Arthur that his plan would take all of his money and he needed others to develop the surrounding area. He wanted his friend to have the first opportunity to buy into this project.

But Arthur thought to himself, "Who in the world is going to drive twenty-five miles for this crazy project?"

He said to Walter that he would think about it and decide later on. "Later on will be too late," Walter cautioned Arthur. "You'd better move on it right now."

"And so Art Linkletter turned down the opportunity to buy up all the land that surrounded what was to become Disneyland. His friend Walt Disney tried to talk him into it. But Art thought he was crazy."

Life offers all of us many opportunities. It is important that we do not ignore an opportunity. Rather, take time to understand and explore the opportunities that are presented to us everyday.

“An opportunity is never lost, it is just taken by someone else…”

Have a great day !

Formula Of Success

Research shows that if we take 100 teenagers at age 15, in 50 years time, 62 will be alive, 38 will be broke, 16 will be working, 7 will be retired on livable income and only 1 will be wealthy.

You may ask me how was that one wealthy person able to achieve success and get to the top? They obviously had the right formula for success. 11 years ago, I was introduce to this Success Formula which I would like to share with you today.

Success = Goal + Effort + Opportunity

We have to know what we want, we have to be willing to work for it, and then we have to select the right opportunity.

Let’s talk about some of the things that we may want in life:-

Goals for our family

O
wning you own home, providing the best for your children, having great holidays and spending time with your extended family are all very important goals.

Goals for our lifestyle
Goals that can bring much enjoyment through the hobbies that we pursued, the car we drive, going shopping and being able to share by giving to others and worthwhile causes.

Goals for our future

Most of our goals for the future will require time and money. Imagine having more time. The money to live the way we choose. Being able to plan for the future, savings, investments, retirement and earning residual incomes.

If we have set great worthwhile goals and have put in the effort to work hard for it and are not getting the success that we want, then we will have to look at the opportunity part of the success formula.

Remember, to achieve the goals for our future, we need to have the right opportunity that can provide us with the ability to have both time and money to achieve the things that we see are important in our life. If the opportunity that we are pursuing are not helping us to get the results that we want in our life, it is time for us to ReTHINK and garnered the courage to change!

Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Remember, "If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten."

Choose the Right Opportunity that can help you to achieve the goals that you have set for yourself and your loves one.

To your SUCCESS!

What are your priorities in life?

I went to HSBC today together with my wife to do some banking matters. While waiting for the customer service officer to assist me with my phone banking pin application, she politely requested me to complete an in house survey form, titled, What are your priorities in life? What a reminder... I said to myself, we should be asking the above question everyday to remind us of our priorities.

The survey is related to personal financial planning. The lady asked me to rank the answers from 1 to 4 (1 – Top Priority, 4 – Low Priority) The questions are as follows:-

1. Reducing Commitment (Paying off your debts)

2. Financial Security (If your income stopped, what problems would that cause your family)

3. Education Planning for your children (What are your plans for your children’s education)

4. Retirement Planning (If you haven’t got sufficient income to retire on, how would that impact you?)

What are your rankings?

I once read an article on Time Management by Tim Elmore and he taught me on How to Determine Priorities.

Below are three Rs that will help you start to find out where your focus should be. Knowing your priorities then will help you schedule your time better. Ask yourself these questions and see if they help you.

• Reward: What gives me the greatest joy? Finally, as you sort through your personal priorities, look of the element of personal fulfillment. There is deep satisfaction in doing what you are gifted, and perhaps even "called" to do. There is nothing easier than not finding time to do the things you don't want to do.

• Requirement: What is required of me? When you feel overwhelmed by obligations, stop and sort out your "must dos" from your "choose to do's" Our obligations in life are the biggest priorities we have, but more often than not, you will find that you really do not have to do many things; you choose to do them. Simply ask: what must I do? What is required of me here?

• Results: What gives the greatest return? When sorting our priorities, ask the question: What brings the greatest results when I do it? You should spend most of your time working in the area of your greatest strength. He is a wise man who wastes no energy on pursuits for which he is not fitted; and he is wiser still who from among the things he can do well, chooses and follows the best. Find your gift and capitalize your time using it.

Here’s a Checklist for making decisions.

• Is this consistent with my priorities?
• Is this within my area of competence?
• Can someone else do it better?
• What do my trusted friends say?

I want to leave you with a powerful quotation on priorities by Tom Hopkins, a man who inspired me to take the challenge to succeed in the world of selling. He quote, "Getting in touch with your true self must be your first priority."

Live your life to the fullest potential. Life is fantastic!

Guard Your Mind !

A good friend of mine sent me a very interesting story below about a man who once upon a time was selling Hotdogs by the roadside.

He was illiterate, so he never read the newspapers.
  • He was hard on hearing, so he never listened to the radio.
  • His eyesight was poor, so he never watched television.
  • But enthusiastically, he sold lots of hotdogs.
  • He was smart enough to offer attractive schemes to increase his sales. So his sales and profit went up..
  • He ordered more raw material and buns
  • He recruited more supporting staff to serve more customers.
  • He started offering home deliveries. Eventually he got himself a bigger and better stove.
  • As his business was growing, his son, who had recently graduated from College, joined him.

Then something strange happened.

The son asked, "Dad, aren't you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?"

The father replied, "No, but tell me about it." The son said, "The international situation is terrible. The domestic situation is even worse. We should be prepared for the coming bad times."

The man thought that since his son had been to college, read the papers, listened to the radio and watched TV.

He ought to know and his advice should not be taken lightly.

So the next day onwards, the father cut down his raw material order and buns, took down the colorful signboard, removed all the special schemes he was offering to the customers and was no longer as enthusiastic.

He layoff some of his staff.

Very soon, fewer and fewer people bothered to stop at his hotdog stand.

And his sales started coming down rapidly, same was his profit.

The father said to his son, "Son, you were right".

"We are in the middle of a recession and crisis. I am glad you warned me ahead of time."

Moral of The Story: It's all in your MIND! And we actually FUEL this recession much more than we think we do!

Our mind is so important that we have been given a will to control it and feelings to help determine whether our thoughts are positive or negative. Whatever state our mind is in will determine the outcome of our seconds, minutes, days, weeks, months and years to come.

Think for a while . . .

1. How many times we confuse intelligence with good judgment?

2. Choose your advisers carefully but use your own judgment

3. A person or an organization will prevail over bad times, if they have the 5 Cs

  • Character
  • Commitment
  • Conviction
  • Courtesy
  • Courage

The tragedy today is that there are many walking encyclopedias that are living failures.

The more practical and appropriate views on this economic recession is:

"This is the time to reunite together for any small or a big organization, this is the time to motivate and retain people which are the biggest asset, this is the time to show more commitments to the customers, this is the time to show values of our company to the world ".

So take heed and guard our mind will all deligence!
